HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- The Henrico Police Athletic League held its 14th annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway Saturday.

Volunteers handed out food in the parking lot of the athletic league's administrative office on Staples Mill Road for about an hour Saturday morning.

Henrico Police Athletic League Executive Director and CEO Kenneth Ragland said over 300 turkeys and "fixing boxes" were given to needy families identified via various agencies like social services and the police department.

Ragland said the need was even greater this year because of the pandemic.

"It's actually a win-win for us because, yes, we're able to meet the needs of families that are suffering this year," Ragland said. "But we're also able to spread goodwill, positive PR for our law enforcement officers because PAL is all about forming positive relationships between police officers and you."

Ragland said the organization has handed out more than 3,000 turkeys since the initiative began.
