RICHMOND, Va. -- Police are investigating after a man was shot in the parking lot of a Richmond Food Lion grocery store Monday morning.

Officers responded to the parking lot in front of the Food Lion, in the 6400 block of Jahke Road, for the report of a shooting at approximately 11:57 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police have not released any information on a suspect or motive at this time.

While on the scene, CBS 6 reporter Shelby Brown reports seeing bullet casings on the ground and a car that appeared to be involved in the shooting get towed away.

While the parking lot of the Food Lion was closed off, customers were still going back and forth into the store.

Kerri Lynch was one of those customers. She used a side parking lot so she could go into the store. Lynch says she yellow tape but had no idea what was going on.

"One of the girls, I asked her what happened and she said, 'oh it was a shooting.' It caught me off guard and when she said that, I said 'do you know if the person is OK?' She was like probably not," Lynch recalled. "Then she said you're the only person that has asked that question. That surprises me because that was my first thought. That family. It's still a human being, regardless of if the person is good, bad, or indifferent."

Anyone with information is asked to call Major Crimes Detective O. Reyes at (804) 646-3874 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
