HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Virginia lawmakers continue to call for reform at the United States Postal Service as customers share stories of late or missing mail.
Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-7th District) has asked constituents about mail delivery delays and their concerns about the future of the USPS.
“The USPS is a lifeline for so many in our communities. Without it, many Central Virginians would not be able to receive lifesaving prescription drugs, fill customer orders, pay their bills, or receive letters from their loved ones. Particularly as we move closer to income tax filing deadlines, we need to demand active changes to USPS operations that will expedite — not further delay — delivery across our communities. As our office relaunches our USPS-focused survey, I hope many Seventh District residents will take a moment to share their stories and their concerns,” Spanberger said in a statement.
Lawmakers have realized the problems with mail service aren’t a partisan issue.
Rep. Rob Wittman (R-1st District) has also heard from countless of his constituents complaining about delayed bills or medications lost in the mess.
“There is a logjam at the Sandston facility, so our effort has to been to clear the logjams,” Wittman told CBS 6. “Rural delivery route drivers are there to the job, but can only deliver what goes through the Sandston facility.”
Spanberger has urged President Joe Biden to fill vacancies on the USPS Board of Governors and to oust Postmaster General Louis Dejoy.
In a statement earlier this month, a USPS spokesperson said the postmaster general and the executive leadership team took a number of specific action steps to help address the issues including correcting staffing issues and reinstating overtime.
In August, the Henrico Democrat received 1,200 responses from Central Virginians expressing concerns about ongoing delays at USPS.
