HENRICO COUNTY, Va. – A Henrico County student is being featured in a new Netflix documentary that follows four competitors in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Tejas Muthusamy, a former middle school student, made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals four consecutive years.
“Spelling the Dream” follows Tejas on his fourth and final run for the National Spelling Bee crown in 2017.
“It’s obviously really, really cool. They approached us in 2016, four years ago, just floating this idea of the documentary because the people who created it were interested in following spellers and how we study.”
"Spelling the Dream" debuted on Netflix Wednesday and Tejas is even featured on the cover of the documentary.
“I thought it was really an honor to be featured as part of this documentary,” said Tejas. “It was a really, really cool process to be a part of also. Getting to show off a little bit of Richmond and a little bit of my community was also really fun.”
In his final year at the spelling bee, Tejas finished tied for fifth place.
Tejas will be a senior at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s SchooI this upcoming school year.
