Virginia's Haynes Furniture and The Dump are closing after nearly 130 years: 'Bittersweet ending'

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Haynes Furniture and The Dump Luxe Furniture Outlet are closing after nearly 130 years in business.

Haynes Furniture first opened on Grace Street in Richmond and Main Street in Norfolk. E. J. Strelitz, the family-owned chain's executive chairman, created The Dump with his brother-in-law and a team of people, and both stores have continued to operate within the family.

"This is a bittersweet ending, filled with gratitude for four generations of customers and employees," Strelitz said in a news release. "Thank you to everyone who helped us along the way."

Strelitz spent his career working alongside employees he called family — from Richmond showrooms to the company's flagship store and headquarters on Virginia Beach Boulevard. He said supporting employees through the transition is a priority.

"We are committed to standing by our associates, whether they are joining me in a well-deserved retirement or going on to bigger and better opportunities," Strelitz said.

Liquidation sales began at 10 a.m. Thursday across all Haynes and The Dump locations, managed by liquidation firm SB360 Capital Partners. Shoppers can expect discounts of 40% to 80% off retail prices on brand-name furniture, mattresses and rugs, with deeper markdowns expected as the liquidation progresses.

SB360 Capital Partners President Aaron Miller said the liquidation gives Virginia shoppers a final chance to shop both brands at once.

"Generations of Virginians have trusted Haynes for quality and value, and The Dump Luxe Furniture Outlets made luxury brands accessible at outlet prices," Miller said. "This sale brings the best of both together one last time."

In Central Virginia, closing locations include Haynes Furniture stores on Hull Street Road in Richmond and West Broad Street in Henrico, as well as The Dump on Brook Road.
