SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — A 78-year-old man died in a small plane crash in Spotsylvania County on Tuesday morning, according to the Virginia State Police.

The crash happened at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday near the Shannon Airport.

Officials told CBS affiliate WUSA that the plane crashed near a John Deere dealership on Tidewater Trail, just across the street from the airport. An aerial view of the scene shows a small white plane that crashed into John Deere equipment.

The pilot, identified as Rowland A. Babcock, 78, of Ruther Glen, died in the crash. Babcock was the only person on the plane at the time of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified, state police said.
