HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police have identified the man killed Sunday night on Interstate 295 in eastern Henrico County.
Adam B. Hayes, 26, of Mechanicsville, was killed when his car lost power on the interstate, according to police.
"At 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash in Henrico County. The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 295 at the 22 mile marker just north of Route 5," a Virginia State Police spokesperson wrote in an email. "A 1999 Lincoln Continental experienced a mechanical failure which caused it to lose power and stop in the right lane. The Lincoln had no lights on and a 2019 Volvo D13 tractor-trailer struck it in the rear. The collision caused the Lincoln to catch fire."
Hayes died at the scene, according to police. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.
The investigation and cleanup kept the interstate closed for about three hours Sunday night. The interstate reopened around 1 a.m. Monday.
No charges were filed.
