SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. -- State police are investigating a crash in Sussex County that killed a 55-year-old Chester man Saturday night.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said troopers were called to Route 301, north of South Halifax Road, to investigate a "vehicle/pedestrian" wreck just after 10:30 p.m.

"Jeffery J. Hinchey, a pedestrian, was pushing his bicycle southbound, in the northbound lanes of Route 301, when a 2007 Honda, traveling in the northbound lanes, struck Hinchey," Anaya said.

Hinchey, of the 12000 block of Quay Street in Chester, died of his injuries at the scene, officials said.

The driver, who troopers said pulled over and called 911, was not injured.

Anaya said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

There is no word yet if charges will be filed.
