Capitol Square, closed after Richmond riots, reopens with limited hours

RICHMOND, Va. – Capitol Square in Richmond reopened to the public Monday with limited hours and entrances.

Capitol Square was first closed Saturday, May 30 following riots that left multiple surrounding buildings and structures damaged, according to the Department of General Services and Capitol Police.

Two Capitol Police officers were injured when they were hit with objects during the riots.

The Capitol Square gate near the Bell Tower at the corner of 9th and Franklin streets and the gate near the Patrick Henry Building opened to visitors and employees.

Those gates will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily, until further notice.

Officials said all other gates and entrances will remain closed at this time, but may reopen during the coming days.
