RICHMOND, Va. -- One person was killed and four people were shot outside of a Richmond apartment Tuesday evening, according to Richmond Police.

Officers arrived to the Belt Atlantic apartments for the report of a shooting around 6:31 p.m. On scene, they found five female victims, two adults, two teenagers, and one infant suffering from gunshot wounds.

"We were just out here. I was letting my five year old play with her bike," said a neighbor.

The victims were taken to the hospital where one of the women died, according to police.

"It's got us all baffled. We have no motive. What we have is everyone was out in the Quad enjoying the weather and the gunman showed up in the breezeway," said Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith.

Police have not yet released the names of the victims, nor their relationship with each other.

Police believe at some point someone returned fire.

"We have multiple casings on the scene, multiple calibers, different guns," said Chief Smith.

It appears those who were shot were not the intended targets, Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney also addressed the violence in a statement.

"Earlier this evening, five innocent bystanders in our city were shot, one fatally, in a single, senseless act of gun violence.
This is a tragedy that no community should have to experience. My heart aches for our families," said Stoney.

Police are reviewing the surveillance video but no arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call Major Crimes Detective Russell at (804) 646-7715 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or at www.7801000.com [7801000.com]. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
