RICHMOND, Va. -- Firefighters are investigating what caused several manhole covers to be blown into the air in Downtown Richmond Saturday night.

Officials said at least three manholes were blown off around 8th and Grace streets.

The commander said crews were called out for a possible explosion.

No one was injured and there was no damage to any of the nearby buildings, according to firefighters.

However, one the metal covers hit a car on North 8th Street.

As of 10 p.m., the gas company was on the scene awaiting the arrival of a Dominion Energy crew to investigate further.

Two people who were nearby likened the sound to the loudest crack of thunder they had ever heard just before 9:15.

When they looked outside, they said they saw smoke rolling down 8th Street.

This is a developing story, so anyone with more information can submit a news tip here.
