RICHMOND, Va. -- One of the most visible Virginia Capitol Police officers died while undergoing treatment for COVID-19, according to a Capitol Police spokesperson.
Master Officer Woodrow W. "Buddy" Dowdy III, 60, was known to many as the guard stationed at the State Capitol's main entrance.
"Buddy was a natural to be stationed at the guardhouse at Post 1 and greet the governor, legislators, visitors, and others arriving at Capitol Square," Capitol Police Chief Col. Anthony S. Pike said. "His easy-going personality allowed him to be professional while also making visitors feel relaxed and welcome."
Dowdy served the Virginia Division of Capitol Police for 33 years.
"Buddy chose as his career service to others, and for that, we all benefited," Pike said.
Dowdy is survived by his wife, his son, and his extended family.
