GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- The United States Attorney’s Office has charged a Glen Allen woman with federal charges of mail fraud and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Virginia Smith was accused of defrauding the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) out of $224,000.
Smith, according to court documents, engaged in a conspiracy with an inmate at the Baskerville Correctional Center to file fraudulent unemployment insurance applications with the VEC.
Those false claims were filed online on behalf of multiple Baskerville inmates, prosecutors alleged.
The inmate gave Smith the names, birth dates, and social security numbers of other inmates, prosecutors alleged.
Smith would then create false home addresses, false “last employer” information, and a false certification that the inmates were ready, willing, and able to work when a job became available.
Online court records showed a plea agreement, in this case, had been scheduled for June 11 at the Federal Courthouse in Richmond.
