RICHMOND, Va. -- After over a century of assisting students, St. Andrews School in Richmond is continuing to offering new programs to those in need amid the pandemic.

"We are one of a few in the country that provides a full scholarship for every student, particularly for 127 years," Dr. Cyndy Weldon-Lassiter, the head of St. Andrew's School, said.

Dr. Weldon-Lassiter has been the head of the school for over ten years.

"The program that we provide, the social-emotional learning, a focus on nutrition and wellness, the visual arts, the visual and performing arts, where all students play the violin," Dr. Weldon-Lassiter said.

Teachers at the school make sure to prioritize meeting children where they are, highlighting their individual strengths during lessons.

"DJ is very good at sports, so his teachers have incorporated sports into his learning," parent Jasmine Granger said. "So, they'll just say, DJ, let's see how fast it is that you can do these math problems. I like that. They meet the kids where they are. I love that."

Parent Keosha Ross-Walker wants to give back to the school by helping raise money to allow St. Andrews to grow and offer new and different programs to students. She said her two children are thriving at the school.

Her family's thankfulness goes far beyond lessons taught in the classrooms. Recently, Keosha lost her father and was able to find a community of support within the school.

"Ms. Harden, the school secretary, she actually took time out of her day to pray for me, and I've never had that kind of experience with a school. So when I say this really is a community of love and family, it truly is," Ross-Walker said.

St. Andrew's "Shake With SAS" virtual fundraiser will be held this Friday at 7 p.m.

Those who attend will have the chance to learn more about the school and be able to make donations.

To attend the event, visit the St. Andrew's School Facebook page on Friday evening.
