BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech student and football player Isimemen Etute was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder, a statement from the university confirmed.
"The Blacksburg Police Department responded to 119 N. Main St for a welfare check at 10:30 p.m. on June 01," a statement on the Blacksburg Police website read. "On scene officers located a deceased male victim. Detectives were called to the scene to initiate a death investigation. Investigators ruled the death a homicide."
Etute, 18, of Virginia Beach, was arrested the next morning.
Details about the deceased were not yet released.
Etute has been placed on interim suspension from the school and football team.
"Etute is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bond," the police statement continued. "This is an ongoing investigation anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Blacksburg Police Department."
The university released a statement both about the arrest and help available for those impacted by the violence.
"We denounce all acts of violence and stand together in support of one another," the statement read in part. "You don’t need to be close to this to be affected by this. If you need assistance or support, you are encouraged to reach out for help."
