CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Chesterfield Police have identified one of two teenagers found shot in the Belmont Hills Apartment complex.
A 16-year-old boy was found shot to death near the intersection of Chippendale Drive and Handel Court at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.
The young man's family asked the police not to release his name to the public.
A second juvenile with a gunshot wound was rushed to the hospital.
They are expected to survive.
Timothe Harris said he heard 10 gunshots and saw the bleeding teenager several feet from his front door.
“I saw one of the neighbors over here yelling that they needed assistance. The ambulance came and one guy was shot in the leg and then I looked over and saw the other young man lying in the street,” Harris recalled.
SWAT teams then assembled outside an apartment where they believed the suspected shooter was hiding.
Ring doorbell video obtained by CBS 6 showed an officer on a bull horn ordering the suspect to walk out of the apartment with their hands up.
A SWAT team in tactical gear was captured on video staging outside an apartment before they went inside.
Natalia Scott said police feared the shooter may have entered her apartment next-door through the crawl space.
“If that’s the case I don’t feel safe because anyone in these apartments that are attached to my home can access my home,” Scott explained. “I don’t feel safe in my home. I have a two-year-old daughter and I don’t feel safe.”
Scott said officers cut through her ceiling to access the crawl space and several belongings were damaged during the search.
“Over 15 people stormed my home. Watching drones go into my home and once I finally gained access to get back home I find my home just a mess that they caused,” Scott stated. “I gave them access to my home so everyone can basically go home because they had the wrong home.”
Police have not arrested nor charged anyone in connection to the crime.
Thursday afternoon, Chesterfield Police returned to the complex to search inside another apartment.
Officers detained three people while a K-9 and an officer executed a search warrant.
The individuals who were detained were released a short time later.
A small memorial of flowers and a stuffed bear was placed at the site where the victim was killed.
Chesterfield Police Maj. Mike Louth said they do not believe the suspected shooter was still in the apartment complex.
Detectives are working to determine a motive and how many shooters there may have been.
Police have not released a suspect description or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Louth said he would send a supervisor to speak with Scott about the damages.
