HENRICO COUNTY, Va. – Two Henrico County Schools are closing early Friday due to power outages caused by a weather-related transformer fire.

John Rolfe Middle School will dismiss students at 11:30 a.m. while Varina High School will dismiss students at 12:30 p.m.

“Neighboring elementary schools will not be dismissed early, as conditions at these schools are conducive to continuing the instructional day,” said Schools spokesperson Andy Jenks. “While other Henrico County Public Schools are dealing with power outages, there are no additional early dismissals being planned at this time.”

School officials say routes may take longer than usual as bus drivers will proceed with caution during high winds. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Central Virginia that will continue through 4 p.m.

“Students will be dismissed in accordance with the preferences listed on the emergency closure form completed at the beginning of the year,” said Jenks. “If you indicated parent pick up in the event of an emergency, please make arrangements accordingly.”
