PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened on the east side of Petersburg, on Richmond Avenue near Ash Street.
A neighbor said that they heard a shot fired around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
"On their arrival, officers found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound located at the edge of the roadway," Petersburg Police spokesman Capt. Brian Braswell said.
The victim was taken to a hospital where he died.
"The man has been identified as 30-year-old Dionte Mason of Petersburg," Braswell said. "Police believe Mason had been involved in an altercation just prior to the shooting."
Detectives are investigating and looking to speak with witnesses.
