PETERSBURG, Va. – A Petersburg man gave the city a helping hand Monday when he volunteered his services to cut grass at a Petersburg elementary school.
Last week, Wayne Covil reported some Petersburg residents wanted to volunteer their time and services to the city, amid a $12 million dollar budget deficit.
Some residents have already started helping the city.
Over the last two days, David Scott spent several hours mowing the grass near the playground at the empty Virginia Avenue Elementary School.
Scott said he felt inspired and he just wanted to give back to a community that has given him so much.
“I like to do it for my community,” said Scott. “I grew up around here, 35 years all my life.”

“Now I’ve got a piece of the pie, getting my own business started, so it's been going well with that,” added Scott.
That business, Scott’s landscaping services, came in handy as the school’s grass hadn't been cut in weeks.
“I've got people behind me, supporting me, and I just like doing things for my community… Make them proud of me, keep them happy.”
Petersburg city schools could lose an additional $4 million in funds after a proposal during last week’s City Council meeting to cut $12 million from the budget.
Some other Petersburg business owners are also helping the city taking cleaning supply donations to help the city's fire stations.
