JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — An Ashland man was killed in a four-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon outside a James City County shopping center. Donald Lee Howard, 84, of Patrick Henry Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near the Marketplace Shoppes on Monticello Road.

Howard was driving a 2008 Chrysler 300 that hit an unmarked Virginia State Police cruiser at a stoplight.

“Upon striking the unmarked vehicle, the Chrysler overturned and struck a 1999 Ford pick up truck,” Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya said. “At the time of initial impact, the state police vehicle was pushed into a 2014 Hyundai Sonata.”

The Virginia State Trooper and his K-9 were not hurt. The driver of the Hyundai was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation into the crash remained on-going.
