CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The man who wore military fatigues and carried the American flag along Hull Street Road in Chesterfield Monday said he felt compelled to make the patriotic march based on what he saw in the community this Memorial Day.
“They forget why they get the day off with pay. They forget why they get a discount on this and that. They forget why the parking lot at Lowe’s is packed,” the man, who goes by the name “Doc” said. “It’s because hundreds of thousands of men and women, for hundreds of years, have gone forth and done what nobody else would do. They put their lives and their names on the line to protect freedoms that every man and woman should be entitled to.”
Doc said he served in the Navy and Army Reserves. He said he began his 22-mile walk from the Lowe’s at Hull Street and Winterpock Roads. He said he was trained to make such a walk and anything was possible as long as you put your mind to it.
Along his walk, he said some people honked horns and yelled “thank you” out their car windows, other people stopped to give him water and energy drinks and some people just wanted to share stories about the military.
“It’s my country. I love it,” Doc said. “Don’t forget us. That’s all we ask.”
