RICHMOND, Va. -- Police are investigating a murder after a 36-year-old man's body was found in the grass early Saturday morning at one of Richmond's public housing neighborhoods.
Police received a call about a person down at an apartment complex in Hillside Court in the 1800 block of Southlawn Avenue off Commerce Road around 5:35 a.m.
Officers said that when they arrived they found Juan V. Dehaney, of no permanent address, shot to death. Officers said his body was lying in the grass between two apartment buildings.
CBS 6 spoke with a mother about the incident who did not want to be identified. She said the body was found right outside her door, which is too close for comfort.
"It's frightening," she said, "Hopefully they catch whoever did it."
She said her girls were asleep on the couch early in the morning when it happened.
"They heard shots around three o'clock this morning, but they stayed right there because unfortunately in our neighborhood they are like a doorbell, gunshots don't really make anyone jump," she said.
Many people who live in the area said the violence has got to stop especially with so many children in the area.
"I'm trying to raise my girls the right way," said one mother, "They can't even go outside to play, I can't even trust them to go to the playground which is just across the street."
Many have this message for those who are deciding to result in violence,
"That's not the reason why we're put on this earth, I feel like we should help each other more than harm," said one neighbor.
Police, who have not yet given a suspect description, are asking for the public's help solving this case.
