RICHMOND, Va. -- Saturday marked the 13th Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run for the Richmond SPCA and according to Abbey Howarth, this year’s event exceeded monetary expectations.

A fundraising goal of $147,000 was set prior to Saturday's event -- preliminary totals after the event are at $159,000.

“One of the big fundraising components of the event is the opportunity for participants to solicit lifesaving contributions as teams and individuals to support homeless pets in the care of the Richmond SPCA,” said Howarth, a communications specialist for the Richmond, SPCA.

This year’s event attracted 388 runners for the 5K, 517 dogs (and their families) for the dog jog and 957 total registered participants.

Other totals from the event include:

  • Top female 5K participant -- Heidi Schelander, with a time of 20:00
  • Top male 5K participant -- Chris Carrier, with a time of 16:16
  • Top team fundraiser -- Buddy’s Richmond SPCA Alumni Team raised $6,054
  • Top individual fundraiser -- Sarah Sinsabaugh raised $3,190
