HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Long Island has the Baldwin brothers, Kitty Hawk has the Wright Brothers and Chicago has the Blue Brothers. Now a pair of Henrico County brothers is rising to fame in the spelling world. Tejas and Shreyas Muthusamy finished number one and number two in Henrico County Public Schools Divisionwide Spelling Bee.
“We try to work in spelling wherever we can,” the boys’ mother Srilatha Santhanagopalan said. “We don’t just sit and spell; we walk and spell, exercise and spell. We’ll read a magazine and spell words. It’s an ongoing process.”
With the win, Tejas, a sixth-grader at Moody Middle School, moves on to the Richmond Times-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee March 13 at the University of Richmond.
Younger brother Shreyas, a fourth-grade student at Shady Grove Elementary School, misspelled “irreconcilable” during Wednesday’s Spelling Bee at Hungary Creek Middle School. His older brother then correctly spelled “jurimetrician” to win the title.
Last year Tejas Muthusamy advanced all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
