Three people were sleeping inside the house when the fire started at about 8 a.m., according to Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore.

Two people made it out of the home under their own power.

Firefighters found the third person lying on the floor in the home. Elmore said that the third person attempted to get out of the house, but was overcome by the smoke.

That person was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Elmore said.

The fire started in the basement of the home, Elmore said. The home, Elmore said, was a complete loss.

A section of Winterpock Road closed as firefighters worked in the area has since reopened.

This is a developing story.
