HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A 24-year-old man was killed in an early morning crash on Interstate 64 in western Henrico County. Alexander M. Harpine’s 2000 BMW ran off I-64 east near Parham Road and struck a tree at about 1:33 a.m. Saturday.

“The car continued back onto Interstate 64 overturning several times, ejecting the driver,” Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick wrote in an email. “A 2001 Toyota also traveling east was struck by the BMW as it entered back onto Interstate 64.”

Harpine was taken to VCU Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

While the crash is under investigation, police said speed is considered a factor. Police said Harpine was wearing a seat belt, however the driver’s seat may have been reclined making the belt less effective.

The condition of the Toyota driver was not released.

This is a developing story.
