RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – VCU head coach Shaka Smart agreed to a contract extension on Wednesday that will presumably keep him with the Rams through the 2023 season.
Thursday morning, he released a statement thanking everyone for their support:
“We’re extremely thankful for the tremendous belief shown in us by Dr. Rao, Ed McLaughlin and VCU,” Smart said. “We’re also incredibly appreciative of the phenomenal fans that support our program and university. We are very excited about the challenges that lie ahead and the student-athletes that we have the pleasure of working with on a daily basis. Our goal will always remain to progressively move our student-athletes forward on and off the court.”
Smart’s annual salary will rise to a reported $1.5 million per year. His new deal also includes more money for recruiting and travel, plus raises and bonuses for his coaching staff.
