CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Chesterfield fire investigators are working to figure out whether an overnight fire at former daycare center was an accident or if someone set it on purpose.

The fire at the former Kids & Co. Daycare, in the 13800 block of on Village Mill Drive, started around 1 a.m. Friday, according to Chesterfield fire investigators.

It took crews around 50 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Firefighters said it appeared the fire started outside the building near an HVAC unit and some electrical panels.

The fire spread from the outside to the daycare’s roof. The fire had extended into the attic of the building and smoke was heavy throughout the interior of the structure.

Investigators said it did not appear the cause of the fire was arson, though they could not definitively rule anything out. Investigators told CBS 6 they’d recently been called to several fires in that area of Midlothian.

No one was inside the building when it caught fire. A passerby who saw smoke coming from the building called 911 to alert the Chesterfield Fire Department to the fire.
