PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) - The owner of a Virginia restaurant was killed in a weekend crash. Prince George County Police told CBS 6 Senior Reporter Wayne Covil that Jimmy Basis, owner of Jimmy's Grille in Petersburg, died in a crash on Sunday evening.

Police said the vehicle Basis was driving ran off the road near the intersection of Crater Road and Birdsong Road in Prince George County and hit a tree. The accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Basis was alone in the vehicle. The cause of the crash remained under investigation, police said.

A sign posted on Jimmy's Grille told customers the restaurant will be closed January 23 - 29 due to Jimmy's death.

"I'm certainly going to miss him, so so very sorry to hear about this," said Doris  Beasley, a Jimmy's Grille customer.

"I first met Jimmy, when the grille opened back in 1971.  I grew up in Petersburg so this was a really exciting place to be," said Joy Metzger, a Jimmy's Grille customer since 1971.

Information on the restaurant's website indicated the restaurant opened in 1971 in the Walnut Hill section of Petersburg.[CLICK HERE: Leave a message for the Basis family on the CBS 6Facebook page]
