HOPEWELL, Va. -- An eyewitness said she heard too many shots to count before a man and woman were killed a shooting Thursday afternoon in a Hopewell neighborhood.

When police arrived to the 1300 block of Central Avenue, near Trenton Street, at about 2:30 p.m., they found a man dead and a woman critically wounded.

"One person got out of the car and started shooting over there,” said a Hopewell mother, who grabbed her daughter and went to the safest place she could think of in her house: the bathroom.

"I was just trying to protect her to make sure nothing happens to her," she said.

She said with the number of shots she heard ripping through Central Avenue, she was terrified a bullet would come through the window or walls.

"I'm scared to be here when that happened," she said.

Hopewell Police said a man and woman were outside a home around 2:30 p.m. when they were both hit with multiple shots.

Crime Insider sources said the 38-year-old man died on scene and the woman was taken to VCU Medical Center where she later died.

"Anyone who may have been in the area around 2:30 or driving by and you saw vehicles, there may have been a white four-door sedan in the area,"Lt. Michael Langford with Hopewell Police said.

That sedan was captured on a neighbor's surveillance camera. If you know who owns it, police want you to tell them.

“We are not going to put up with the violence and we are asking for your assistance to solve this and other incidents that have plagued us this year,” Langford said.

Anyone with information on the crime is urged to call Lead Detective Kate Williamson of the Hopewell Criminal Investigations Unit at 804-541-2284.
