CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- Virginia State Police has identified two Maryland residents who were killed in a Richmond Turnpike crash Tuesday afternoon.

State police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 301 (Richmond Turnpike) at 1:15 p.m.

"The preliminary investigation reveals that a 2004 Ford Explorer was headed north when it attempted to pass traffic in a no-passing zone," said a state police spokesperson. "The driver, attempting to avoid traffic in the southbound lanes, ran off the left side of the highway, struck a tree and overturned."

The driver, 50-year-old Jason Williams, of Hyattsville, Maryland and passenger, 55-year-old Wendy Terrell, also of Hyattsville, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred approximately 3/10 of a mile south of Doggetts Fork Road.
