CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Strong wind nearly blew a tractor trailer off the I-64 Highrise Bridge in Chesapeake on Monday morning.
"The driver of a 2007 Freightliner tractor trailer, was traveling I-64 westbound in the left lane, when a large gust of wind pushed the empty trailer to the other lane, causing the driver to lose control, and strike the side of the bridge," Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya referencing the preliminary state police report into the Monday morning crash. "The driver, Wayne B. Boone of Suffolk, Virginia, was entrapped in the cab of the truck, dangling over the Elizabeth River. Mr. Boone was successfully extracted by the quick actions of the Chesapeake Fire Department and taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital where he suffered non-life threatening injuries."
Firefighters were dispatched to the crash at about 8:42 a.m.
"It is unknown the amount of damage done to infrastructure of the bridge," Anaya continued. "Alcohol was not a contributing factor. No charges are placed at this time."
The Virginia State Police investigation into the crash is on-going.
