Portsmouth child dies after dog bite

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- A child has died after being bit by a dog in Portsmouth, Virginia.

The 911 call came in at 1:53 p.m. Monday for a dog bite in the 5600 block of Darby Close, according to Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department.

When officers and medics arrived, they found the a two-year-old child suffering from life-threatening injuries. Medics rushed the child to the hospital where the child later died.

The dog's owner surrendered the dog, described as a one-year-old male pit bull, to Animal Control.

The dog was put in quarantine.

Detectives with Portsmouth's Major Crimes Unit are investigating the case with the assistance of Animal Control.
