Police release details about deadly I-95 shooting

PETERSBURG, Va. -- A man died from gunshot wounds after he was found in a crashed car on Interstate 95, according to police.

"At 10:46 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 13), Virginia State Police responded to a crash on Interstate 95 approximately 1/2 mile north of Wagner Road exit (mile marker 49) in Petersburg," Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. Dylan Davenport wrote in an email. "Troopers arrived to find a sedan in the median of Interstate 95 with an unresponsive driver. Further investigation revealed the male driver was suffering from gunshot wounds."

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"A firearm was recovered from the vehicle," the police email continued. "Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office responded to the scene and is investigating the incident."

State police say they are in contact with area police departments to see if the shooting is related to any incidents reported within their locality.

The man's name has not yet been released.
