RICHMOND, Va. -- A man charged in connection to a fatal shooting at a Richmond 7-Eleven was arraigned in court Friday morning.

Police arrested 49-year-old Craig Maryland on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 5200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue for several reports of a person shot at the 7-Eleven store at the intersection of Chamberlayne Avenue and Azalea Avenue, according to Richmond Police.

There they found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the deceased as Vanterry M. Fields. He was said to be in the 50s.

"Detectives have determined the victim and suspect, who knew each other, got into a fight, which led to the shooting," a Richmond Police spokesperson said.

Maryland was arraigned by video camera at John Marshall Court Friday. A magistrate declined to set bail, but a judge did appoint Maryland an attorney and told Maryland his attorney could file a bond motion.

Maryland is due back in court on November 17, at 10 a.m.

Anyone with information was asked to call Major Crimes Detective K. Hughes at (804) 385-7269 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
