PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that killed a 23-year-old man at a busy Petersburg intersection Thursday afternoon.

The scene is unfolding along the 1100 block of Wythe Street.

"This is a three-block crime scene here in Petersburg," CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil said. "What we know right now is that there is a young man, 23 years of age, lying off to the left of the street. He has been shot and killed."

Officers said about a dozen shots were fired around 3 p.m.

Witnesses said a man was walking down the sidewalk when he was hit.

There were reports of an argument between someone inside a black SUV and a person on the street, but it is unclear if that person is the shooting victim.

"A few minutes after that, there was the sound of gunshots that rang out," Covil said. "The young man was hit in between two vehicles."

A driver's car was damaged in the crossfire.

"Shots rang out. The light turned and I went through and I saw everybody kind of running," one driver said. "So I pulled over and that is when I got out and noticed that I had two bullet holes in the car."

At last check Thursday afternoon, police were waiting for the medical examiner to arrive.

Officials said Wythe Street is closed between Chappell and West streets while police investigate.
