HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police are searching for the hit-and-run driver that killed an off-duty veteran Henrico Police officer walking in Glen Allen Saturday morning.

Henrico Police were called to Greenwood Road at Winfrey Road for reports of a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian just after 11 a.m.

"The Henrico Police Crash Team’s preliminary investigation reveals the suspect vehicle was traveling northwest on Greenwood Road when it struck the pedestrian," Lt. Matthew Pecka with Henrico Police said.

Officers said the victim, who was later identified as Donald L. Lambert Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lambert, a 33-year veteran of Henrico Police, was the Captain of the Division’s Special Operations Group.

Officials said he was not on-duty at the time of the crash.

“We are deeply saddened at the tragic and untimely loss of Capt. Lambert,” Henrico County Chief of Police Eric English said. “He was a selfless leader, mentor and friend who served our community with pride and dedication for nearly 34 years. My thoughts and prayers are with his
family, colleagues and friends.”

Officials said investigators are working to identify the "person or persons involved" in the crash.

No vehicle description was available at last check.

Ground and air searches took place throughout the afternoon with the help of state police, Richmond Police and deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, New Kent County Sheriff’s Office and Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.
