Man killed by sheriff's deputy investigating 'suspicious activity' in Caroline

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- Virginia State Police are investigating after a man was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy in rural Caroline County Monday evening.

Deputies with the Caroline County Sheriff's Office responded to the 17000 block of Countyline Church Road for reports of "suspicious activity" around 5 p.m., according to Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. Dylan Davenport.

"Citizens had encountered an unconscious male in the driver’s seat and called 911," Davenport wrote in an email. "After the deputies arrived on scene, the driver regained consciousness. During the deputies’ interaction with the driver, he was subsequently shot."

The driver died on the scene. No information about what led to the shooting was released.

The driver's name has not yet been released.
