HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- Authorities have identified the driver of a moped killed in a two-vehicle crash on Route 360 in Hanover County on Valentine's Day.

Troopers were called to the wreck involving a Ford van and a moped at westbound Route 360 west of Route 605 just before 5:40 p.m.

Officials said 24-year-old John P. Ryan, of King William, was on a moped headed west on Route 360 when he was rear-ended by a van driven by 31-year-old William J. Christian, of Aylett.

"Unfortunately, Ryan succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene of the crash," troopers said.

Christian, who was wearing his seat belt, was not hurt, according to troopers.

Official said Sunday that charges were pending in the crash.

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is aiding in the investigation, which officials said remains ongoing.
