PETERSBURG, Va. -- One person is dead and two others were injured following a shooting in Petersburg on Tuesday evening.

Petersburg Police were on the scene in the 1500 block of East Washington Street where the three people were reportedly shot. One person died at the scene, police said.

The other two shooting victims were found on Locust Street and High Pearl Street.

"The other two places are where victims were located, not where a shooting took place. We believe all the victims came from this location," Petersburg Police Chief Travis Christian said.

Christian said the shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. after a call for multiple shots came in. Crime Insider sources said that more than three dozen shots ran out.

"It's still an early scene and we don't actually know who was firing but we do know multiple shots were fired at this location. Detectives are trying to process the information they're receiving. We ask if anyone was in the area and saw something to call us," Christian said. "Several victims and several families involved and our hearts go out to the families and we understand their pain. But it is also difficult for us to effectively work the scene while trying to control the crowd so we had to call in additional resources so we could preserve the scene."
