CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A Chesterfield County nurse is $150,000 richer after playing Powerball online.
Jennifer Cates says she decided to play Powerball after spotting a billboard highlighting the Powerball jackpot was increasing.
“Hey, it might be time to buy one,” she recalled thinking.
Cates decided to buy her Powerball tickets online for the December 23 drawing. One of those tickets ended up winning $150,000.
“It feels so good!” she told Lottery officials. “I’m in shock!”
Cates matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball number. Normally that would win $50,000, but when she bought the ticket, she spent an extra dollar for Power Play, which tripled her prize to $100,000.
Cates said she may use her winnings to buy a new vehicle.
Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.
