CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Chesterfield County made history Monday, swearing in Kevin Catlin as the county's first Black county administrator.

Catlin says he is focused on serving residents with integrity, dedication, and an open ear as he steps into the role.

He is starting that new chapter with his family by his side. Catlin moved to the area from Michigan with his spouse, Nate, and their newly adopted baby, Beckett, who is just 3 weeks old.

"While I haven't been here long, the community has welcomed us with open arms and I am truly appreciative of that," Catlin said.

Catlin has spent the past couple of months working with the Board of Supervisors, getting up to speed on the county's priorities and some of the biggest concerns facing residents.

"So what I'm hearing from the Board of Supervisors is that there needs to be attention placed on data center integration in the community and how we emphasize that development. We also know that Shoesmith is a concern of residents, and so we're working with the state to address those matters in cooperation and collaboration with them," Catlin said.

Catlin says whatever the issue, he wants residents to know their voices will be a part of the conversation.

As he starts his first day on the job, he is making it clear he is not just the county administrator — he is also a member of the community.

"I am your new county administrator but I'm also a fellow Chesterfield employee, resident and neighbor in the community. I'm so thankful to be here and looking forward to get to work. Let's get it done," Catlin said.

Catlin says he is prioritizing being a listener and encourages residents with questions or concerns to reach out.
