RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia State Police has released body cam video showing a sergeant being hit with a large chunk of asphalt thrown by a rioter in front of Richmond Police headquarters early Monday morning.

Hundreds of people marched to the Richmond Police headquarters on Sunday night and engaged in an hours-long standoff with officers. The group gathered in response to videos surfacing online showing a Richmond Police SUV pushing through a group of protesters near the Lee monument.

Body cam video released Thursday by state police shows a sergeant being struck in the leg.

The sergeant had to be hospitalized due to the incident, according to state police, who reported the incident earlier this week.

“Since then, demands have been raised on social media and by #RVA elected officials to “show it” with video,” Virginia State Police posted on Facebook. “Thankfully, the sergeant's injury wasn't more serious, and he was treated and released.”
