RICHMOND, Va. -- A powerful storm system will bring us our best chance so far this year for severe weather as it moves through the region on Wednesday. The threat for severe storms will be conditional on how quickly the low-level cold air can be displaced by warmer air coming in from the south-southeast.
Models are almost always too aggressive this time of year in eroding the cold air, and if we stay cool, our severe weather threat will remain low. The dynamics in place with this system are very impressive however, and if the warm front moves into southeast Virginia, storms will damaging winds and tornadoes will be likely.
These storms would be shear-dominant low-topped supercells, developing rotation very rapidly. We’ll have team coverage, including multiple CBS 6 Storm Chase teams, to keep you covered regardless of what happens.
Colder air will return to the region Thursday through Saturday behind the strong cold front associated with Wednesday’s storm system. Warmer air will return to the area late this weekend, with highs in the low to mid 60s Sunday and Monday.
Risk of severe storms, including tornadoes, looms in Southeast
20 million people in the southeastern United States are at risk of severe storms and tornadoes Tuesday into Wednesday.
The National Weather Service predicts a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms with winds capable of producing tornadoes along the Gulf Coast from eastern Louisiana to Alabama today and tomorrow.
In addition to the threat of strong tornadoes along the Gulf Coast, areas from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, and north to southern Tennessee are at risk of several tornadoes, widespread damaging winds and some large hail.
If you live in or are traveling through the South throughout the day Tuesday or Wednesday, be prepared for storms that could produce tornadoes and have a plan to find safety. Be sure you have a way to get the latest severe watch and warning information.
Storm timing
Storms hit Texas early Tuesday and are expected to move to Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi Tuesday afternoon into the evening hours. Alabama and southern Tennessee will likely see severe weather well into the overnight hours.
Wednesday, storms will continue through Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and eastern Virginia.
Damaging winds will be the greatest threat Wednesday, with the threat of tornadoes still possible though not as likely.
