RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police have released the names of the two men who died after being hit by a train Friday night on the city's Southside.
According to James Mercante with Richmond Police, 50-year-old Darrel Page, of the 2000 Block of South Kinsley Avenue, was found dead near the railroad crossing at Belt and Broad Rock Blvd. Officers also found 40-year-old Clarence Alexander, of the 2400 block of Cersley Street, injured near the tracks. Alexander received medical treatment, but died at the scene.
Investigators said the men were on the tracks when a train came through around 10:30 p.m. Friday night near McGuire Veterans Hospital. According to witnesses, the men were trying to cross the tracks despite the railroad safety gates being down as the train approached.
Page’s roommate said Darrel left the house to go to the store, but never came home.
A neighbor who lives next door was devastated to learn of his death and remembered him as a sweet person.
"Such a good person to me ever since he's lived here. He's taken my trash cans in for me and always just talked very nice and polite. A kind person. It's devastating. I just can't believe it. I hope they find out what happened,” she said.
The woman said Page did walk often, usually with his dog.
“He seemed to be very knowledgeable of things, so I have no idea why he would to that," the neighbor said.
