PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. -- A day of celebration turned tragic for a Prince George County High School student’s family. Sierra Wise, 18, was killed Saturday morning on her way to graduation, according to Prince George Police. Wise's pickup truck veered off the road and hit a tree at about 7:30 a.m. Her graduation began at 9 a.m.

"This is a day graduates won't forget,” Donita Gibbs, a mother of a Prince George High School student, said. “Having someone pass on a day like today is like someone passing on your birthday -- it's a hurting thing. I'm so sorry for that family. I don't know the child, but I am a mother."

Wise’s classmates took to Twitter to express their sadness. Some of those tweets hit cyberspace as graduates walked across the stage at the football field to get their diploma.

"We don't know when our day will come, but my heart goes out to the family because that child had her whole life ahead of her," said Maria Evans.

The crash happened at the intersection of Loving Union Road and Pumphouse Road in Disputanta. Police are in the early stages of their investigation. A crash team took measurements, trying to figure out what caused the deadly crash.

“On behalf of the Board of Supervisors, and County Administrator Percy Aschraft, Chief Ed Frankenstein would like to express condolences and offers thoughts and prayers to the family for these tragic circumstances,” Prince George Police spokesman Capt. Brian Kei said.
