CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- He didn't have a weapon, but he did have a deep voice.

That's the description police are working with after an early Saturday morning robbery at a Circle K off Willis Road.

Not far away, and about as fast as the boys at Bellwood tires can fix a flat, their surveillance camera caught the masked suspect walking into the convenience store across the street and running out precisely 39 seconds later.

"Open 24/7,” said Leroy Brown. “It's the way things are around here. People are hard up."

Police say the suspect never pulled out a weapon, but say his deep, threatening voice was enough.

"She's pregnant. It shouldn't happen to her,” said a woman who said that pregnant clerk was a friend, who was just trying to get as many hours in before the baby comes. The clerk’s friend asked CBS 6 to hide her identity, but said she was just in the store minutes before the robbery.

I asked her why she said she felt guilty by leaving. “Because nobody should go through something like that, especially by herself,” she said. “It made me feel bad."

And as bad as this area is, Brown says there's little you can do to change that.

"Jump off the highway,” Brown said. “Get right back on the highway, before the cops get here you can be 30 minutes up the road in a different county."

Police can't say what happened after the man fled on foot, but Brown says he knows what will happen if he walks across the street.

"I know we are secure,” Brown said, suggesting neighbors would be providing some of that security. “We are OK. There won't be any calling the police, if you know what I'm saying."

Police say the suspect is about five feet seven inches tall and if you were in the area and saw something suspicious, call police.
