ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — Police charged Andrew Blackwell Middleditch, 55, of Ivy, with DUI following a Monday morning crash on Barracks Road that resulted in the death of a 78-year-old driver. Middleditch was held without bond at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. The crash happened at about 8:12 a.m. Monday near the entrance of Haffner Farm.

“A 2013 GMC Yukon [driven by Middleditch] and a 1990 Chevy Lumina [driven by Lonnie Wycliffe Branham] were both traveling east bound in a legal passing zone,” Albemarle Police Public Information Officer Carter Johnson said. “The Yukon was attempting a left turn into a farm entrance. At the same time, the Lumina attempted to pass the Yukon. The vehicles collided and the 1990 Chevy Lumina overturned.”

Branham, 78, of Earlysville, died at the scene. Middleditch was not injured in the crash.

“The crash remains under investigation by the Crash Reconstruction Team,” Johnson said. “This marks the third fatal crash in 2015. There were 16 fatal crashes in 2014.”
