CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. -- An hours-long manhunt connected to a high-speed chase that injured a Charles City County Sheriff's Office captain and detective Wednesday afternoon along Route 5 has ended.

Virginia State Police Spokesperson Sgt. Steve Vick said the two-vehicle crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. on Route 5 just west of Glebe Lane.

"A 2011 Dodge Charger, belonging to the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, was westbound on Route 5 with its emergency equipment activated. A 2005 Crown Victoria, also belonging to the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, pulled out from a service station with its emergency equipment activated and the two vehicles collided on Route 5.

The impact of the crash forced the Charger off the right side of the road where it struck a 2012 Genesis that had pulled off the road to yield to the oncoming police vehicles. The Charger then overturned and came to rest partially in the roadway," Vick said.

CBS 6 reporter Jon Burkett said the incident started when Capt. Jason Crawley pulled over an SUV along Route 5. The vehicle did stop, but when the captain got out of his unmarked Dodge Charger, the vehicle took off, according to Charles City County Sheriff Javier Smith.

Crawley pursued the suspect, who was heading east on Route 5. Crawley was joined on the pursuit at Glebe Lane by Detective Charlie Hargis, who was driving the Crown Victoria.  That's where officials said that the unmarked cruisers collided.

The captain’s car bounced off the other cruiser and struck another vehicle that had pulled over along Route 5.

The captain and detective were medflighted to VCU Medical Center with injuries Vick called serious, but non-life threatening.

The SUV involved in the pursuit kept going, but eventually crashed into a guard rail on Route 5.

Officials said the suspect jumped from the vehicle and ran into the woods near the high school. As a result, all Charles City schools were placed on lock down as a precaution for a portion of the afternoon. Witnesses spotted police, sheriff's deputies and a search helicopter in Charles City County.

Burkett reported that the suspect, who was described as a black male with dreadlocks wearing only boxer shorts, was apprehended on a nearby farm Wednesday evening.

State police crash reconstruction teams are investigating the accident.

Route 5 between Glebe Lane and Courthouse Road were closed as a result of police activity for a portion of the afternoon.
