RICHMOND, Va. -- A female bus driver was slashed while on the job just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The number five bus was headed to the bus depot when the incident occurred. Richmond Police, at the scene of the incident near Bellevue Avenue and Chevy Chase Street, said the passenger got into an argument with the driver, and then cut her.
The suspect took off, and possibly got into a vehicle. Police canvassed the area for clues. The surveillance tape from the bus was reviewed by a GRTC operator supervisor and Richmond Police detectives. All buses have security cameras with both video and sound pick-up, both inside of and outside of the bus.
The bus driver was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
"This incident is disturbing and saddening," Carrie Rose Pace, GRTC Public Relations Manager, said. "GRTC is a family of employees, and we take care of each other and our customers. Safety is our highest priority, but we also pride ourselves on the trustworthy connections we cultivate with our riders."
"We at GRTC are already preparing to address counseling that may be needed for employees, and especially operators, after this evening," said Pace.
